Preventive treatment to slow down kidney diseases.

A nephrologist is a specialist of the kidneys. This type of doctor will evaluate and treat kidney conditions such as polycystic kidney disease or diabetes affecting the kidneys.

Nephrologists often have a particular area of expertise within the field. Dr. Rodriguez’s area of attention is on preventative kidney care. In other words, her sole focus will be on slowing down the progression, or reversal of advanced kidney problems, and avoiding need for dialysis. In order to accomplish this, our office will be requesting older records, all medication lists, and likely ordering additional tests. It is not uncommon that Dr. Rodriguez will weigh in on many of your medications (given their effects on the kidneys) and potentially change some of them in collaboration with your other doctors. 

Because the kidney performs so many critical functions, nephrologists maintain expertise in primary kidney disorders, but also in the management of all aspects of kidney dysfunction.
